Last August, the Indiana State Fair stage collapsed just moments before
Sugarland was supposed to take the stage. As a result, 7 individuals passed away and, now, many of the families have filed lawsuits. Numerous victims filed a civil lawsuit against the band Sugarland and the stage construction companies.
The collapse was caused by a clear lack of authority and chain of command. Indiana State Fair officials warned Sugarland's manager that they should cancel the performance because of the storm, but the manager did not follow the officials' advice. Then, the Indiana State Police Captain decided to cancel the show, but was too late. The stage had already collapsed before the announcement could be made. The cause of the collapse was the winds that had picked up to a speed that was beyond the stage's ability to withstand.
