After 14 years of civil litigation, the animal rights groups which tried to sue Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus are going to pay a $15.75 million settlement. This will settle the case they brought against the circus owners as well as another racketeering case that the circus owner, Feld, brought against the groups. The animal rights groups sued the circus over the way they treat Asian Elephants. Feld has now received over $25 million from the animal rights group. This includes this recent settlement as well as a previous agreement which he made with a single animal rights group.
This amount should cover all of the legal fees he incurred. His attorney, John Simpson stated that this will make amends for the way the animal rights groups seriously abused the judicial system. The animal rights group initially brought the claim under the Endangered Species Act. All of the groups’ claims were dismissed by a federal judge in Washington.
