General Motors Co. is creating a plan that would give compensation to injured victims associated to the ongoing ignition switch recall regardless of the accident timeline, according to an attorney who is suing the auto manufacturing giant.
Bob Hilliard, the plaintiff’s lawyer, who recently met with General Motor’s compensation professional, Kenneth Feinberg, indicated in an interview that Feinberg is planning to offer some kind of compensation for injured victims regardless if the injury happened prior or after the 2009 bankruptcy. Based on the laws of bankruptcy, General Motors is protected from any liability prior to filing for protection.
Hilliard is representing over 50 families who have lost members linked to faulty ignition switches utilized in multiple old General Motors vehicle models. At present, General Motors has officially been linked to 13 deaths regarding the ignition switch matter. Hilliard wasn’t aware of Feinberg meeting with attorneys for other complainants.
The meet highlights General Motors strategy to resolve the legal and monetary fallout. While Feinberg was in Washington, attorneys from General Motors were in New York to make a request for the judge to maintain its bankruptcy terms that protected the company from other lawsuits prior to the 2009 bankruptcy.
