The highest court in the United Kingdom has given additional rights for lawyers to blow the whistle against their law firms.
In a strictly monitored lawsuit, United Kingdom’s Supreme Court recently ruled that law firm partners and other members of restricted liability partnerships, who reveal illegal wrongdoings in their workplace can be given protection from retaliation like its colleagues.
The lawsuit in question consisted of a Tanzanian-based lawyer who was removed from her law firm, Clyde & Co LLP, after she made a complaint to an employment tribunal that a law firm in Tanzania participated in a joint scheme which involved her employer making bribe payments to secure clients.
Furthermore, the whistleblowing protection lets LLP members benefit from protection and rights given to employees which include rest break entitlement, paid annual leave, protection from being harshly treated on a part time status, and auto enrolment pension rights.
Law firms functioning as an LLP should look into their policies and working circumstances that apply to their employees to safeguard compliance.
