GM is now linked to 19 deaths as a result of defective faulty ignition switches in vehicles.
The increased death number was revealed recently from a compensation professional retained by the car manufacturer, Kenneth Feinberg, who offered the public his first update on claims made against GM regarding the switch.
Mary Barra, GM’s CEO, created a victim compensation fund and handed out the responsibility of finding out who was injured or killed to Feinberg.
The fun received over 440 claims. 19 were confirmed as deaths while 12 others were confirmed as legitimate injury claims.
The death toll could increase as there are more than 125 death filed last week.
GM, which reserved $400 million for the compensation fund, may require an additional $200 million.
At the same time, attorneys on both side are in a legal battle as to whether or not GM committed fraud by not informing of the faulty switches during the bankruptcy proceeding.
