The U.S. Supreme court made a recent ruling indicating that warehouse workers for Amazon.com Inc. aren’t, in any way, entitled to spend for theft screenings at the end of their shifts.
The SC, through an opinion made by Justice Clarence Thomas, claimed that employees can’t continue with a suit seeking earnings for security checks since the time spent on waiting for the process wasn’t deemed an important aspect of their jobs.
The court’s ruling overturned the decision of a lower court of pushing the employees’ case to continue.
Plaintiffs filed a suit against a staffing firm that supplied Amazon.com Inc. with temporary employees, who fill in online orders. Amazon was named as the defendant in other suits. Workers claimed they’d spend up to nearly half an hour of unpaid wages waiting to leave their shifts due to the lack of screeners.
The case are deemed high stakes on both parties. An attorney for the plaintiffs predicted that hundreds of thousands of present and former employees of Amazon will be affected.
